Today I’m here to talk about a topic that came out of a client session I had about a year ago. In this session, my client was really struggling about what to do next. He was faced with the knowledge that as he continued doing the work he needed to do, he further understood the gap in his knowledge. Think of the Aristotle quote: “The more you know, the more you know you don’t know.” For some people, this concept can be really scary! I believe that this fear actually stems from another common saying that goes: “Ignorance is bliss.” The idea is that if you don’t know what you don’t know, you will be happy. But I think that that is completely backward. To me, the idea that knowledge is a bottomless pit represents ultimate freedom in life! So, what I want to do today is to present three points to you about the way this concept relates to life, how it relates to mental health and recovery, and the way it relates to the relationships that you have — and ultimately, explain why ignorance is NOT bliss.
