Today I want to discuss with you all some of the ways I’m seeing the current addiction treatment system failing. It’s not an easy or popular conversation to have — but I think we’re failing people left and right here, and the overdose rates are continuing to go up. With a system that has billions of dollars funding it annually, you would hope that it chips away at the problem — but the reality is that we’re not seeing any improvement at all.

What we really need to do is take a different approach; a radical transformation for how we look at and approach the problem of addiction treatment. We need to completely rethink our baseline beliefs about what’s going on (such as the criminalization of drugs and the idea that drugs are inherently bad). I hope you’ll join me today to dive deeper into this topic and try looking at addiction from a different perspective.

Topics Discussed:

[13:52] Why we need to consider, as a whole, a complete radical transformation of how we look at ‘addicts’ and addiction treatment.

[16:15] We need to completely rethink our baseline beliefs, starting with the criminalization of drugs and the idea that drugs are inherently bad so that we can start addressing the real problem.

[24:04] How we can start looking at this all from a different angle and what that could mean for the future of the addiction treatment system.
